Appearing on TV Land's "The Soul Man," civil rights activist and former Georgia Gov. Sonny Perdue (R) told host Craig Kilborn that he voted for Barack Obama in 2008 because he was "light skinned."

"I voted for Barack Obama in '08 and, you know, I figured, you know, it was the first time in my life, I voted for a black man and, you know, to be honest, I was light-skinned, not too dark-skinned," Perdue, a retired major general in the U.S. Army, said. "So I don't think I really gave him a fair shake because he's dark."
"We'll give him a fair shake now that he's white," Kilborn responded.
Perdue, who said his daughter is a black woman, said he was also "light-skinned" when he ran for president in 2002.
"I'm fair-skinned, you know, but I knew that I was light-skinned, so I was at a disadvantage," he said.
"There was a candidate in Georgia who was dark-skinned, but I didn't go to his rallies," Perdue added.
In 2008, Perdue ran in the Republican primary for governor in Georgia. His campaign was dogged by accusations of racism from both black and white voters, and Perdue eventually lost the nomination to Gov. Sonny Perdue (R).
Caleb Eberwein, a Republican who is running against Perdue in Georgia's 6th Congressional District, has sought to link Perdue to racist tropes, saying the former governor "should be ashamed of himself" for his 2008 comments.
“It’s sad to think that Gov. Perdue is still at it,” Caleb E be359ba680
