Rajkumar is a middle-class young man, who is popular among women. His younger brother (on whose death he is very close) was an admirer of the United States. As a response to his brother’s love for America, Rajkumar decides to become an Indian and become an American citizen. However, his lifestyle and ideas are a radical contrast to those of his country. The story of the young man’s journey from being a typical country boy to a patriot is not only interesting, but also gives you a glimpse of what lies within us.
Vishwanathan, who is almost seventeen, lives in a small town and has a quaint and humorous point of view. One day, out of curiosity, he decides to visit Chennai, the capital city. On his way to Chennai, he meets a mysterious man, named Murali, and also meets a lawyer named Suryanarayana, who advises him to go to a place called Kanyakumari. There he learns about the legend of Kanyakumari and is taken by surprise when he sees the sea water.
Abishek’s father gives him some pieces of advice before he goes to meet his parents in a new country. The advice given to him is: “Don’t show your hands in public, and make sure you don’t talk to strangers.” After he arrives in America, Abishek is nervous about the other people living in the United States. He finds it very difficult to talk to his classmates and also to his mother. He even finds it difficult to accept his father’s decisions as he is used to following his mother’s wishes.
Nowadays, when we are increasing our exposure to the outside world through electronic media, we tend to forget the importance of having a geographical culture. However, in order to make sense of things, we need to have a common sense, which will enable us to understand what has happened, what has changed, and also what is happening. It is only when we understand the culture that we can get our bearings, and then, we can understand the other people, who are different to us.
